Uniting on the Shore of #GullahGeechee Due to the Rising Sea

The Gullah/Geechee Sustainability Think Tank recently hosted the 4th Annual Coastal Cultures Conference which engaged the participants in a number of issues including protecting cultural heritage and cultural and environmental resources in the face of rising seas and climate change.  Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) who is also a part of the “Pocantico Group” which issued a call to the international community to do the same (http://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/solutions/pocantico-call-action-climate-impacts-and-cultural-heritage#.VzOpGxUrKt8) departed to continue the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy World Tour” to share the outcomes of this conference with other national and global leaders focusing on this issue and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Since climate action is one of the goals, Queen Quet is disappointed that her travel schedule for the Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy World Tour will preclude her from attending the first of a series of town hall meetings to be led by one of the partners of the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition, the South Carolina Aquarium regarding sea level rise (http://www.scaquarium.org/townhalls/).   However, she will be taking part in each of the subsequent meetings given that she has been an extremely active and vocal leader locally, nationally, and internationally in regard to this issue for several years.

Queen Quet is known for bringing together circles of people of diverse backgrounds to connect with one another on a wide range of issues.  So, she is gladly returning back to the Gullah/Geechee Nation for “Hands Across the Sands” at Folly Beach on May 21, 2016 at 11:45 am in order to literally bring the hands of people together on the coast.   She will be one of the speakers at this event as they draw more attention to the movement to prevent seismic gun use along the Gullah/Geechee Nation‘s coast.

For those that have not yet signed a petition in support of stopping the seismic gun testing or the call for global support in protecting cultural heritage resources in the face of rising sea level rise, they will be able to do so if they stop by the Gullah/Geechee Nation‘s booth at the St. Helena Community Market on Saturday, May 29, 2016 from 10 am to 1 pm.  Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will be there supporting her home community and continuing to unite folks on the shore of the #GullahGeechee Nation!
