Come by Here Lawd!: Gullah/Geechee Spiritual Journey

As I stood in the place of the outpouring, “Bethesda Christian Fellowship” on historic St. Helena Island, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation, I saw the Spirit of GOD filling the space and moving through the congregation.  I could feel the presence of those that are now in the realm of the ancestors that had been a part of this congregation and used to sing, “Come by Here Lawd!”  Then “Suddenly” from the pulpit also came the pastor into that congregation.   Dr. Kenneth C. Doe illustrated how one had to press to get to Jesus as Jesus passes by.  He came down amongst the congregants and passed through the pulpits and made his way through this massive temple from one side to another.   He culminated with what I knew was coming, the touching of the hem of His garment.  I shouted!  I smiled.  I gave thanks.

This instance at the “Suddenly” Holy Convocation revival was a welcoming home for me because it brought me back to De Gullah Cunneckshun being on “De Save the Sea Islands Tour” and singing Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers’, “Hem of His Garment.”  It made me think of the many days that I was on the highway pushing my way to get to the places that I knew in my soul GOD was sending me to.   The times that I was joined by De Gullah Cunneckshun on such journeys brought more joy to my soul and those that were in the throngs of people that we met along the way.

I knew why GOD insured that I would be able to be here on the island to participate in the revival for the fifth time.  I knew why I was to continue to press my way to get here just as much as I pressed my way to each and every city on the the “Gullah/Geechee Land & Legacy World Tour.”  The reaching to touch GOD always resulted in me being renewed and “made whole.”   GOD not only reached back, but embraced me on the journey as I felt GOD embracing those now gathered together here seeking, reaching, and pressing.

I thought that the shout at the closing of the message was the bow on this blessed gift I had received at this homecoming, but that was simply an additional gift.  These gifts ended up sealed by the minister of music singing what has come to be what some could deem my theme song, “Send Me, I’ll Go!”  I heard this song in this same space many years ago and it instantly became a part of my soul and I have sung it here and on the road many times as I took the road alone.  I saw the flashbacks and GOD gave me a quick look at the future which actually begins in a matter of days as I take to the road and to the air once again.  I am thankful that whenever I go, I can take the powerful spiritual messages from my Gullah/Geechee community with me and share these with others.  I look forward to continuing the journey as I look to GOD and say once again, “I’ll go if I have to go by myself!  Send me!  I’ll go!”
