Living Black History-Celebrating the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Legacy on Gullah/Geechee Riddim Radio

Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) and hostess of the official radio station of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, Gullah/Geechee Riddim Radio, continues to insure that the history of her forebears is written and told. She began the annual on air “Black History/African Heritage Month” celebration with Living Black History-Celebrating Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Legacy. Tune in to hear her discuss the 100th year of the celebration founded by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and how the Gullah/Geechee cultural heritage embodies this. Also, learn the on-going efforts to keep Gullah/Geechee culture alive in the face of climate change, sea level rise, and the threat of offshore drilling and other environmental injustices which threaten the protection of cultural heritage treasures and have negative impacts on the quality of life in the Gullah/Geechee Nation.

Queen Quet: Today is the day I respond! I have been following you for quite awhile and recently subscribed. For so long I wondered what in the world I would ever have in common with the Gullah people or nation or you. I am a little red – headed white lady from Wisconsin! I found out about the Gullah people, language and traditions when I read a book called “The Water is Wide” by Pat Conroy in college. I lived in Georgia for 20 years and occasionally made trips to the coast, aware of the Gee hee presence the entire time. So what is my connection? Answer: Everything! After listening to the radio and watching the videos and reading your amazing posts I find that I am enlightened and educated. And you, Queen…we women still have so few strong role models. You are one of mine. Thank you for being a strong mentor for me and for many other sisters. A friend and I are thinking of coming down to SC this summer for the yearly conference. So, when I read your amazing and edifying posts, I feel more and more that WE BE means me too. In fact, I have come to realize that WE BE encompasses the whole world and all of her people!
