Coastal Cultures Conference 2015: De Wata da We: Gullah/Geechee Sustainability

The 2015 Coastal Cultures Conference: De Wata da We: Gullah/Geechee Sustainability will focus on the sustainability of Sea Island waterways and the Gullah/Geechee waterway traditions.  Sessions will include seafood safety and human health, Gullah/Geechee traditional fishing methods and environmental impacts, oysters as a keystone of the environment, and spirituality, creativity, and the sea.   The day will include a Gullah/Geechee fish fry and oyster reef restoration activities.

1-2 pm  Sustaining Gullah/Geechee Fishing Traditions & Human Health presentations by Dr. Jamelle Ellis of MUSC’s Department of Public Health Sciences and Jolvan Terez Morris, Ph. D.  LMRCSC Postdoctoral Fellow at Savannah State University
2-2:15 pm Conserving Our Coast by Joy Brown of the Nature Conservancy
2:15-2:45 pm    Gullah/Geechee Cast Net & Crab Trap Creation Demonstration by Captain Legree and Quintin Gayten of the Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association
2:45-3 pm Break
3-3:45 pm De Gullah/Geechee Community & Sustainability Cultural Collaboration Circle
4-4:45 pm Oyster Shell Bagging for Oyster Reef Rebuild  (Bring something to change into or put on over your other clothes for this.)
