“The Weeping Time” and De Gullah/Geechee Ooman

As my ancestors walked out that morning, they had no words to say

They were unsure why they all were being taken out that day.

Marched away from a plantation that they had reshaped to be home here

To be stood again at a place where no one seemed to care.

When the first mother saw her child taken and stood on the auction block

Her heart could not beat in its syncopated rhythm due to the shock!

She had prayed that this day would never come for her children or for her again.

She fell onto her knees and cried out to the sky because on earth she had no friend.

As she shook and bowed, her tears hit the ground

That is when heaven heard the sound

And it began to rain buckets from the sky.

I believe the ancestors were crying was the reason why.

Again their children and children’s children were being sold

By these men whose hearts were cold.

They saw nothing wrong with selling 436

Because this was a part of their lifestyle and continued enslavement tricks.

On the same date of the sale in 2014, the rain fell too.

The rain fell as a reminder to me and to you

To never forget the Weeping Time and all that our ancestors went through.

The Weeping Time was the largest African enslavement auction to every take place. It was held in Savannah, GA on March 2 & 3, 1859. 436 Gullah/Geechees were sold. www.gullahgeechee.net

Tears continue to fall in my spirit as I think about the Gullah/Geechee women that were sold away from their children and their children, husbands, fathers, and brothers that were sold away from them during The Weeping Time which was the largest auction of one group of African people to ever take place.  436 Gullah/Geechee women, men, and children were sold in Savannah, GA at a race track on March 2 and 3 in 1859.  They were sold by Pierce and John Butler who had enslaved them and numerous other African people in Coastal Georgia because he was broke.  He then sought to further break the hearts and spirits of these people by selling them for his personal financial gain.

Numerous Gullah/Geechee living within the Gullah/Geechee Nation and throughout Georgia today are descendants of those sold during “The Weeping Time.”  We are thankful that there are those that seek to insure that there names will never be forgotten.  These individuals continue to call out these names at family reunions and ceremonies at the Butler Plantation to keep these spirits honored and the power of their strength alive.  To that end, I am thankful for Annette Holmes of GlynnGen.com who decided to make a list of these names for all the world to see:
