31st Annual Heritage Days Celebration

at 

Penn Center, Inc.

“Eyes Still on the Prize: Celebrating a Legacy of Change”

This year’s event is being co-chaired by our own, Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation   (www.QueenQuet.com) and Dr. Valerie Jackson of the Beaufort County School District.

Three days of celebration will take place on the campus of the historic Penn School from November 7-9 and the weekend culminates with fellowships at the local churches.   Oytotunji African Village, Penn graduates and staff, Penn Club members, and Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation will all be a part of the 3 pm opening ceremony and founder’s memorial service on Thursday.   This will be followed by the opening of the “Taste of the Sea Islands” in the Penn Dining Hall at 5 pm, the Road to Remembrance at 6 pm in Frissell Hall, and a traditional prayer service at Bethesda Christian Center from 7-8 pm.   At the close of the prayer service, folks can again return to the dining hall for the “Taste of the Sea Islands” where DJ Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™) will provide music and they can go to the wine and cheese reception with featured artist of the year, Cassandra Gillens in the York W. Bailey Museum.

Friday’s Youth Day begins at 9 am and will will featured Darryl “Chill” Mitchell.  Aunt Pearlie Sue will be the MC for the day.   While the youths continue to enjoy the main stage, the symposium on “Civil Rights & Social Change” with music by Natalie Daise will take place in Darrah Hall.

At the closing of the symposium, the oysters will be roasting and the fish will be frying for people to partake of during the Roy C Blues Concert with a tribute to James Brown and DJ Sweet Music Man.

Saturday morning, the parade begins on Highway 21.  Make sure to get to your parking place no later than 7:30 am before the main road closes!   This is the largest parade of Gullah/Geechees that exist!

The Artists & Authors Row and the Gullah Roots Village will be open from the morning to educated the guests.  As the parade goers enter with the drummers this year, they will be ushered into these areas before the opening of the main stage.   Queen Quet & De Gullah Cunneckshun will feature Natasha Robinson of St. Helena Island on Saturday’s main stage.  In addition on Saturday, the Macintosh County Shouters, Elder Louise Miller Cohen,  artist Jonathan Green, Alvina Gadson, The Learning Tree and the Alcorn Concert Choir will all present from 1-5:30 pm.

At 5:30 pm, the doors open for the 1st Annual Gospel Praise at Heritage Days which will feature recording artist, Latrese Bush.

From 6-8 pm, the Slide Dance Workshop will go on in Frissell Hall in order to prepare folks for the slide party of the night from 8 pm until in the same location!
