Queen Quet Invites you to be a part of “Gullah/Geechee Famlee Days!”

Toyota & Audubon recently selected Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.QueenQuet.com) for a “TogetherGreen Fellowship.”   Queen Quet is launching the first series of public events for her project entitled, “Gullah/Geechee SEA & ME” in which SEA stands for “saving environmental actions” and ME stands for “marine environment.”  Queen Quet will personally host two Gullah/Geechee Famlee Days in the coming months.  The first will be held Friday, August 3, 2012 beginning at 3 pm on Edisto Island, SC.  The participants will travel down the Edisto National Scenic Byway and will learn about Gullah/Geechee history, fishing traditions, and living from the land and sea along the way.  This will culminate with a special ancestral tribute ceremony at Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve at 6 pm in conjunction with the Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ (www.gullahgeechee.info) opening.   This was the site at which the “Gullah Village” in the film, “The Patriot” was shot.   In order to participate in the day’s activities, please contact the Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition at GullGeeCo@aol.com.

The second Gullah/Geechee Famlee Day will be held at the Hunting Island Nature Center on Hunting Island in Beaufort County, SC on Monday, September 3, 2012 which is Labor Day.   The event will engage Gullah/Geechee families and supporters in a number of marine education activities including fishing, marsh walks, beach education, cast net making, casting, and films about the Gullah/Geechee culture on the Sea Islands and how Gullah/Geechee survive by using their traditional fishing methods.   Members of the Gullah/Geechee Fishing Association (www.gullahgeecheefishingassociation.com) will have a fish fry throughout the day and Gullah/Geechee cuisine will be on sale along with books, CDs, and crafts items.  The event will be for the entire family.  The fish fry and activities begin at Noon and will end at 5 pm.  Bring the fishing gear and the family!  Admission is FREE and open to the public!

Queen Quet is calling on all Gullah/Geechee families to come out with multiple generations to share in discussions and fun about their traditions.   Queen Quet will present at both events and will share the culture of the community and how the community can work to insure that the fishing industry and health of the waterways in the Gullah/Geechee Nation (www.gullahgeecheenation.com) can continue to exist for generations to come simply by everyone working together to do so simple things to keep the environment in balance.  Cum jayn we pun de sea an bring hunnuh famlee!
