Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week and Gullah/Geechee Jubilee

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ for 2012 will be the “Gullah/Geechee Jubilee.”  The event will return to Charleston County, SC in the Gullah/Geechee Nation.   This will be the culmination of “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” in Charleston, SC.   The week begins at the July 29, 2012 Charleston RiverDogs baseball game and continues with supporting numerous Gullah/Geechee events throughout the week including the FREE “Gullah/Geechee Heirs Property Workshop and Dialogue” on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 6:30 pm.  (Contact GullGeeCo@aol.com or 843-838-1171 for details on all activities and to pre-register for the workshop.)  You can download the brochure of “Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week” activities here: http://content.yudu.com/Library/A1xq1a/GullahGeecheeNationA/resources/index.htm

Friday will open with a Gullah/Geechee living history luncheon and the screening of the documentary, “America Street.”  Chef BJ Dennis will show his Gullah/Geechee culinary skills.  Participants will next have an official welcome to the city and tour the Robert Smalls memorials.  After this, the participants will take a historic Gullah/Geechee journey down the Edisto Island National Scenic Byway with an ancestral tribute at the Atlantic Ocean.  Ticket for the day-$30 per person for non-members and $20 per person for Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition members.

Saturday will be at Charleston Maritime Center in downtown Charleston, SC.   Admission is $7 per person and $20 for family of 4.

Noon-1 pm Opening Drum Circle and Libation Ceremony featuring Wose African Drummers and Dancers (Bring your drums and tamborines.)

1-2 pm   De Lighthouse Theater Puppet Show

2-3 pm De Gullah/Geechee Ooman: We Famlee, We Storeee featuring Sister Terrie of “Geechee 101,” Da Geechee Gyal-Regina Williams & Poetress Carlie Towne

3-3:30 pm Histo-musical presentation by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation

3:30-4:15 pm De Gullah/Geechee Livin Marketplace (Learn crafts and history from natives of the culture.) featuring healing touches from “A Soulful Touch” http://www.asoulfultouch.net/  & Sankofa Traveling Museum “54th Mass and 1st SC Regiment Collection” viewing & discussion with Angela Jennings

4:30-5 pm Centenary Youth Choir

5-5:30 pm Evangelist Pat Walker and YAMM

5:30-6:15 Gullah/Geechee Film Premiere

6:30-7 pm Closing Shout Circle and Procession with Wona Womalan West African Drum & Dance Ensemble

Sunday 2-6 pm the first stop on the tour will be the historic McLeod Plantation which was a Freedmen’s Bureau site during the US Civil War.  After that, the participants will have a final fellowship in historic Sol Legare after touring James Island.   There will be a re-enactment of the historic Battle of Sol Legare by Gullah/Geechees that were part of the cast of the film, “Glory.”   Registration for tour departing at 2 pm from downtown Charleston $20 for non-members and $15 for Gullah/Geechee Sea Island Coalition members.

The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival™ was co-founded by Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and Kwame Sha of All Mobile Productions™ (AMP™).  The festival moves to different parts of the Gullah/Geechee Nation and the Gullah/Geechee Diaspora highlighting the history, heritage and culture of the living legacy of Gullah/Geechees worldwide.  Natives of the culture provide presentations, tours, workshops, crafts, and merchandise at the event every year.    Cum shout wid we at de jublee!
